I didn't try before 11 weeks with this doppler because I had not yet purchased it so I can't say when I would have been able to start hearing the heartbeat. One of the reasons for waiting was because I wasn't sure where to look so I wanted to wait until my doctor could find the heartbeat and I would have a idea of where to look. Here are my pros and cons:
Pros:
Very economic. I didn't want to spend a fortune on a doppler and even though there are websites where you can rent one for a couple of months the price for this one was equal to that and I would own one for hopefully future Baby Hs.
Its pretty clear. Definitely not as clear as the doctor's office doppler but for the price I can't complain. It also has good volume control.
Cons:
I found that the screen where the heart rate should show up isn't always right. Even though you can hear the baby's heartbeat consistently the doppler doesn't pick up every beat so the heart rate isn't always accurate. Sometimes you can get it to pick up but the most important part is you can hear the heartbeat and know that "galloping horses" is what you want to hear.
Overall, I think this is a great doppler and if your looking to buy one I say go for it.
**Note: I didn't receive anything for this review. This is just my opinion on a product to help readers who are interested in purchasing a doppler.**
